Series: Midnight Breed bk 11
Author: Lara Adrian
Twenty years after the terror of First Dawn—when mankind learned that vampires lived secretly among them—the threat of violence reigns as the two species struggle to coexist. The only group preserving the fragile harmony is the Order, an elite cadre of Breed warriors dedicated to protecting humans and vampires alike. And in this precarious world of torn loyalties and shattered trust, Mira, a fiery squad captain, finds that every fight bears an intensely personal cost.
Raised among the Order, Mira has always believed in the warrior’s code of swift—and even lethal—justice. But the one thing she desires more than the Order’s hard-won acceptance is Kellan Archer, a sexy but troubled Breed fighter. In love with him since childhood, Mira once broke through his tough exterior during an unexpected night of rapture, but the next day he mysteriously disappeared, never to return.
Kellan didn’t think he would ever see Mira again—or have to confront the truth of why he left. After abandoning the Order years ago, he now leads a band of human rebels intent on carrying out their own vigilante rule of law. Yet a high-profile kidnapping assignment brings him face-to-face with the past he sought to avoid, and the striking woman he has tried desperately to forget. And as tensions mount and the risk of bloodshed grows, Kellan and Mira must take sides—between the competing missions that dominate their lives, and the electrifying passion that claims their hearts.
If you are a fan of the series you will know what to expect with this book. Lara Adrian always has a grand momentous love affair with her characters, and this book is no exception. Mira and Kellan have known since childhood that they belonged together. Due to Mira’s special breedmate talent, Kellan figures out that their relationship will never work. When he leaves Mira is heartbroken thinking him dead, as does everyone else in his life. Mira of course holds the flame of their torrid relationship close to her heart for years after Kellan’s supposed death.
When destiny crosses their paths once again, this couple seems to pick up almost where they left off, even though they are now on opposing sides. The passion between the two is palpable, and as always Adrian writes masterful loves scenes.
The only part of the book that bothered me, was the reason for Kellan falling into his current line of work falls flat, and is never fully explained. It did not bother me enough to put the book down by any means. The ending (which I am not giving away) throws another kink in the Midnight Breed series line, and makes the next installment all the more anticipated.
What I love most about Adrian is that she gives you multiple story lines and points of view at once, yet it isn’t confusing or convoluted. While tying up the pieces of the current love affair, she introduces new loves, and old favorites from the series. I would recommend reading her latest installment.
Fans of the series will remember Mira, the haunting young girl who shows people glimpses of their future with a brief glance into her eyes, and Kellan, the Breed warrior we all mourned for in her previous books who was thought long dead in an explosion. However, even if you are new to Lara’s Breed series, you won’t have any problems following the story. Although I do recommend reading them in order. Not only will it allow you a deeper understanding of the characters, but it also would allow you to immerse yourself in the full depth of Lara’s world. She uses her unique style to draw you into her world of the Breeds, and her descriptions and charismatic characters will keep you coming back for more!
I did have a few complaints when it came to this book though. Number one, I wasn’t very satisfied with what little information was given on why Kellan abandoned his Breed brothers after his supposed death. Even if his reasons were valid and just, the fact that he didn’t have faith in his fellow members of the Order disturbed me. Second, I thought it was unrealistic for Mira to seemingly forget that he has been assumed dead for years. Her hurt didn’t seem to be enough when you take in the situation, and her lack of anger towards him just didn’t seem blend with her character.
With that said, the book is still well worth reading. It not only gives you some closure on these characters and what happened to them, but allows you a glimpse into the lives of some of the other amazing characters in her Breed series (some of which we know more about than others, and some we hope to see more of in the future!) This book also introduces us to a new threat to the Order, which you definatly do not want to miss!
