City of Light by Keri Arthur

cover73772-mediumTitle:    City of Light

Series:  Outcast Book #1

Author:  Keri Arthur

Genre:  Sci-Fi/Fantasy

Blurb:  The first in an all-new futuristic fantasy series from Keri Arthur—the New York Times bestselling author of the Souls of Fire novels.

When the bombs that stopped the species war tore holes in the veil between this world and the next, they allowed entry to the Others—demons, wraiths, and death spirits who turned the shadows into their hunting grounds. Now, a hundred years later, humans and shifters alike live in artificially lit cities designed to keep the darkness at bay….

As a déchet—a breed of humanoid super-soldiers almost eradicated by the war—Tiger has spent her life in hiding. But when she risks her life to save a little girl on the outskirts of Central City, she discovers that the child is one of many abducted in broad daylight by a wraith-like being—an impossibility with dangerous implications for everyone on earth.

Because if the light is no longer enough to protect them, nowhere is safe…

Thoughts:  I adored Keri Arthur’s Riley Jensen series, so there is no doubt that I was going to pick up and read the first book in this new series, Outcast.  You can definitely see traces of Jensen’s writing style – her strong, charismatic characters, her complex yet fascinating storylines, her imaginative worlds, and her spot-on writing style.  Arthur constantly amazed me with her talent and vivid imagination – not to mention her knack for bringing her ‘worlds’ and characters to life.  No matter how ‘stale’ the topics may be for some readers – for instance, I know many readers who are automatically going “Really – more shifters?  Vampires?  Humanoid super-soldiers?  It’s overdone.”  However, Arthur can take that and give it a fresh new spin – she’s just that talented of a writer.  I definitely urge you to give her a try if you haven’t already.

I loved the storyline – as I mentioned it is just so fresh and interesting.  I love the characters – you really get a chance to get to know them, to know what they stand for, what is important to them.  Yet there are still secrets lingering that tease you – urging you to keep reading to learn even more.  I can see this opening book branching out in some really creative ways, and I can’t wait to read more from this awesome new series.

I firmly believe that any review is the opinion of the reviewer but this book eludes me how anyone can enjoy a book that allows the heroine to be treated like dirt the whole book, nothing but betrayal from everybody she tries to help and in addition to her “friends” trying to kill her, the book is depressing and at the end the author did not really even finish the story. Help me out because I gave it 3 Stars only because it WAS addicting and well written but as far as entertainment goes, I was wishing I had never read it when I got the ending (or lack thereof).

I mean the ONLY person that showed her any compassion at all is the one she has to kill herself, that is really messed up IMHO, she really should have killed at least 1 of her new “friends” since they richly deserved it. Yeah, I got a bit involved, the only thing I have to admit is that as much as I hate it, I will have to read the next one even though I feel authors who use this “stick and carrot” method to get people to buy the next book should not be rewarded.
