Heart of Stone by Christine Warren

cover37000-smallTitle:  Heart of Stone

Series:  Gargoyle series Book #1

Author:  Christine Warren

Genre:  Romance/Paranormal

BlurbElla Harrow is trying to carve out a normal life for herself. Well, as normal as an art geek with psychic abilities can hope for. As museum docent and gift-shop manager, Ella is able to keep her distance from people—and her powers in check—while surrounding herself with the artifacts she loves. But how on earth is she supposed to act normal when a thousand-year-old statue on the museum’s terrace suddenly comes to life?

Thoughts:  I had high hopes for this series, as Christine Warren is one of my favorite authors.  I absolutely love her Others series, and I could not imagine not liking this one as well.  Unfortunately, this book really paled in comparison to her other works.  It wasn’t that it was a new series, or that it was about gargoyles rather than shifters – I was actually excited to read something different from her.  But in the end, the story disappointed me on other levels as well.

Overall, the whole thing was just bland.  The characters were not very charismatic – in fact, at times they were downright annoying, particularly Ella.  While it seems like she is supposed to be innocent, instead she comes across as just dense.  Something about her just irked me the wrong way, and as much as I tried to ignore it and enjoy the rest of the book, it was very hard to do so.  And Kees….well, let’s just say that not only did he re-animate after being a statue for thousands of years, but his mindset came from that same era and leave it at that.

The potential was there for a great book, but for some reason it just didn’t come into fruition in this one.  A bit disappointed, but after reading so many of her past books and loving all of them prior to this one, I guess it’s to be expected that she would hit a miss now and again.  Still love her as an author, and look forward to the books to come!

Bummer…I love her books. I was looking forward to reading this one. Now I’m not so sure. I will have to think about it!

Gail, I had the same issues with the book Sarah did in regards to Ella.
