Hunter of Shadows by Nancy Gideon

Title: Hunter of Shadows

Series: Moonlight bk 5

Author: Nancy Gideon

Genre: Paranormal Romance

The secrets he knows about her could get him killed.

Transferring to the New Orleans Police Department, Detective Silas MacCreedy has a hidden agenda: to secure his clan’s place once again in the Shifter hierarchy. What he didn’t count on was stumbling upon a sexy assassin who could shred his best intentions and lead him into a dangerous dance that threatens to engage his heart.

But the ones he doesn’t know . . .

Monica Fraser knows just how to make a man beg—for his life. But she has no clue how to fight her attraction to the fiercely intense detective who seems determined to get in her way, both professionally and intimately.

. . . could kill them both.

When emotional attachments to the past and an unexpected glimpse of a different future have her questioning her deadly purpose, Nica must discover the truth about her secret abilities in order to free herself from the forces that control her. But that freedom comes with a price—trusting those she’s been ordered to eliminate.

It’s really rare lately that I will pick up a book and be completely sucked in to the point were I stop doing everything I need to do and read the book front back in one sitting. This was one of those books. When I started reading the book I wasn’t sure what I was going to think about it, and when I closed the book two hours later I still wasn’t sure what I thought other than it had really sucked me in.

The romance between Silas and Nica is really interesting. On one hand they want nothing to do with each other because of their reasons for being in New Orleans, one the other hand they can’t stop wanting each other.

Both Nica and Silas are being controlled by others and think that there is no way they can be together Regardless of the fact of their feelings. I really enjoyed watching these two fall in love and work through their differences and what was keeping them apart. I liked how they considered how their decision to be together and how it would affect those in their lives that relied on them.

There is also the story of what is going on between Silas partner Alain and Max the head of the shifters in New Orleans. This story line I believe started in another book, and is a continuing arc throughout the series. Not knowing the whole story however didn’t take me out of the story.

Even though this book is part of a series you can read it as a stand alone, I did and didn’t feel lost at all. I’m sure there were things that would have made more sense to me if I’d read the whole series, but they didn’t take me out of the story at all.

This is one of those books that has it all, a slight paranormal story line (I say slight because even though their shifters they don’t shift much), a couple with chemistry that at times burns up the pages, a story line that that has one big conflict and two smaller ones all connected. It’s a book guaranteed to suck you and keep you reading till the very end. There is also a really good setup for the next book in the series.

I did not like the first book in the series, but this is with new characters? Perhaps I will try this one again.
