#1 bestselling author Maya Banks continues her suspenseful and steamy Slow Burn trilogy with this second book-a twisting tale featuring a strong yet vulnerable heroine in danger and the sexy alpha hero who must save her.
Abandoned as a baby to a young wealthy couple and raised in a world of privilege, Arial has no hint of her past or who she belonged to. Her only link lies in the one thing that sets her apart from everyone else—telekinetic powers. Protected by her adoptive parents and hidden from the public to keep her gift secret, Ari is raised in the lap of luxury, and isolation. That is, until someone begins threatening her life.
Beau Devereaux is no stranger to the strange. As the head of Deveraux Security, he’s more than familiar with the realities of physic powers. So when a family friend approaches him about protecting his daughter, he’s more than ready to jump on board. What Beau isn’t prepared for is the extent of his attraction to his beautiful and powerful client. What began as a simple assignment, just another job, quickly turns personal as Beau discovers he’ll do anything at all to protect Ari. Even if it costs him his life.
Thoughts: This book picks up where Keep Me Safe left off. The lure that keeps me coming back to a series is seeing the characters from previous reads. To my delight we get to see plenty of Ramie and Caleb and Eliza and Dean from book 1.
There is quite a backstory that is filled in for Ari and we see a glimpse of connection between her parents and Beau’s parents. For a portion of the book I think that we may see some redeeming qualities in the elder Devereaux’s… but alas the only thing those 2 did right was their 4 children.
When things really ramp up at about 50% I could not turn the pages fast enough!!! The suspense and the action!! Wow!! Who was after Ari? What were they trying to make her do with her powers? Are her parents still alive? Will they find them in time? All of my wonderings and breath-catching moments were wrapped up in a big red bow with the Happily Ever After that we love about a Maya Banks book.
We get a lot of Zack in this book and glimpses into his psyche and where the next book will take us. I cannot wait to see what Maya has in store for us in Safe at Last!
After-thought: It takes a lot of words to describe the things that Ari can do with her telekinesis. So I feel like this series does not have the amount of dialogue that I have become accustomed to while I’m reading. That’s neither bad nor good just something that I have had to adjust my thinking to.
