Julie & Julia

Julia Child (Meryl Streep) and Julie Powell (Amy Adams) are featured in writer-director Nora Ephron’s adaptation of two bestselling memoirs: Powell’s Julie & Julia and My Life in France, by Julia Child with Alex Prud’homme. Based on two true stories, Julie & Julia intertwines the lives of two women who, though separated by time and space, are both at loose ends…until they discover that with the right combination of passion, fearlessness and butter, anything is possible. REVIEW: From the moment that I started seeing previews for this movie I knew that I had to see it. I love Meryl Streep and Amy Adams, and it looked hilarious. I wasn’t wrong. It is one of those movies that makes you feel good. I loved that both Julie and Julia were very strong women however they were at loose ends in their lives looking for something more, and how they persevered in doing what they had set out to do no matter the obstacles.

I really felt Julia’s pain in her infertility as it is a battle that I still struggle with, even though my children hit the double digits next year (no more babies for us), but how she channeled that heartache into her cooking and her husband. I loved the absolute love that she had for her husband, and him for her. I also loved that she never gave up on her dream to teach how to cook french food, and to publish a cook book. Watching Meryl (only one of the most amazing actresses of her time) portray Julia it was like she was channeling her, she must have watched hours of her cooking show to get her mannerisms done so well.

When I listened to Julie at her job I cried, that had to have been one of the hardest jobs in the world to have at that time. When she goes to the lunch with her friends and feels like a failure, I totally understood that also. The thing that I really liked about her though was that she took all that anger and did something with it. I loved the scenes where she is complaining about not having any readers but her mother, anyone that blogs feels like this at times (at least I do). The lobster scene though was one of my favorites.

I left the movie wanting to read both books and also to get Julia’s cookbook. So I added them to my 2009 reads list, and hopefully in the near future I will get to read them.

I give this movie a 5 out of 5 as there was nothing I didn’t love about it.
