Review: Secrets in Death by J.D. Robb

Title: Secrets in Death
Series: In Death bk 45
Author: J.D. Robb
Genre: Murder Mystery

A new novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling series: Lt. Eve Dallas must separate rumors from reality when a woman who traffics in other people’s secrets is silenced.

The chic Manhattan nightspot Du Vin is not the kind of place Eve Dallas would usually patronize, and it’s not the kind of bar where a lot of blood gets spilled. But that’s exactly what happens one cold February evening.

The mortally wounded woman is Larinda Mars, a self-described “social information reporter,” or as most people would call it, a professional gossip. As it turns out, she was keeping the most shocking stories quiet, for profitable use in her side business as a blackmailer. Setting her sights on rich, prominent marks, she’d find out what they most wanted to keep hidden and then bleed them dry. Now someone’s done the same to her, literally—with a knife to the brachial artery.

Eve didn’t like Larinda Mars. But she likes murder even less. To find justice for this victim, she’ll have to plunge into the dirty little secrets of all the people Larinda Mars victimized herself. But along the way, she may be exposed to some information she really didn’t want to know…

Thoughts: A person would think that after 45 books they’d be stale and the same story over and over, and yet these books aren’t. Maybe it’s because when you’re writing about a murder cop there are so many different stories you can write.

One of the things I love about this series is the entire cast of characters. From Eve and Roarke, to the family they’ve created and the myriad other characters that are in their lives. I also like the fact it has only been about 4 years since the first book Naked in Death.

In Secrets in Death Eve has to solve the murder of a person who she very quickly comes to loathe. I’ll be honest I so didn’t see who the murderer was until the end of the book when it was revealed. That is one of the many reasons that I still love this series. It doesn’t matter to me how soon I figure out who the murderer is, I love watching Eve and her team figure it out.

I will tell you that I had to go back and re-read the series from the beginning to figure out the connection Eve and Roarke had to the victim. Which kicked off my huge J.D. Robb re-read.
