Sylvia Day Interview + giveaway

When Mel and I went to RomCon we met a new to us author Sylvia Day. She is one of the nicest people we’ve met and her books are fabulous. She has a new book that just came out Seven Years to Sin which is an amazing historical,  and she has a new paranormal series Renegade Angels the first book A Touch of Crimson which comes out Oct 4th and a contemporary anthology, Men Out of Uniform, with Maya Banks and Karin Tabke in October as well. She is one very busy woman.

We are super excited to have her on the blog today. So without further ado we turn it over to Sylvia to answer some of your burning questions.

TBRG: Who has been the biggest influence on your writing?

SD:Michael Hauge. He teaches some phenomenal writing classes and his “Six Stage Plot Structure” changed the way I write books.

TBRG: What is the one thing your readers would be the most surprised to know about you?

SD: I’m a bit goofy.

TBRG: Where is the one place you have always wanted to go, a place on your bucket list?

SD: I want to scuba dive the Great Barrier Reef.

TBRG: Who are some of your go to authors, and what are you reading right now?

SD: Lisa Kleypas, Shelby Reed, Nalini Singh, J.D. Robb… I have about two dozen more writers whom I adore and read voraciously, but I’d be here awhile listing them all. Anyone curious about my reading habits can check out my Goodreads profile. I’ve been tracking my books there since I bought my Kindle a year ago. Presently, I’m reading Holiday in Death by J.D. Robb

TBRG: If you weren’t writing and keeping us in books (thanks for that by the way), what would you be doing?

SD: Traveling, watching big dumb blow ‘em up action movies, reading, going on trips with my kids, having girls’ weekends with my friends.

TBRG: Who is on your playlist when you are writing?

SD: I can’t write to music. There are songs that remind me of certain scenes or characters, but I don’t listen to them when I’m actually writing.

TBRG: Where do your ideas/characters come from?

SD: I honestly have no idea. There have been times when I just sit down and think, “Come on… I need an idea.” And there it is.

TBRG: Are you a planner or a fly by the seat author?

SD: Totally a pantser. I have no idea where the story is going until it gets there.

TBRG: You are a very versatile author you write in all three genres and have books coming out on all three in the next month, when do you sleep?

SD: Honestly, I can’t function without sleep, so I make time for it. If I need a nap, I’ll take one. I find time to write by sacrificing time doing other things. It’s just that simple. Something has to give and rarely is that my writing time.

TBRG: What do you want us to know about each of these books?

SD: For what it’s worth, I think Seven Years to Sin is my best historical ever. I’m very proud of it. It follows the passionate, emotional journey of two people who find just what they need in each other. A Touch of Crimson is the launch book in a new paranormal romance trilogy about angels, lycans, and vampires. Although each book features a different couple, there is an overarcing storyline. It’s set in the same fictional universe as my Marked series and the couples have fierce, sexy relationships. My novella in Men Out of Uniform is part of a mini-series of novellas about deputy marshals. They’re so much fun to write. Each of the novellas so far (I’ve written three, although one won’t be out until next summer) feature tough, kickass deputy heroes who have deeply tender and highly erotic relationships with their women.

TBRG: What do you love most about being an author?

SD: Everything… except the deadlines and bad decisions made by other people that negatively impact my book(s).

TBRG: What do you love most about each of these heroes and heroines?

SD: In Seven Years to Sin, Alistair is man who doesn’t believe he’s worthy of the heroine, but he does believe he can make her happy. Instead of turning away from her, he pursues her, laying out all of his faults and past transgressions so she can make an informed decision about being with him. I love that about him. Jessica is a woman who appears perfect on the surface, but she’s suffered in her life. She accepts Alistair for who he is, totally and completely, and when push comes to shove, she realizes what he’s known all along–that she can him happy in return, and she’ll fight for the right to do so. We posted our review of this book yesterday.

In A Touch of Crimson, Adrian is forbidden to fall in love. He’s punished other angels for the same offense–it’s what he was created for. When he falls for Lindsay, instead of angsting and beating himself up for it, he owns his feelings for her. He won’t belittle them by thinking of them as a mistake. He loves and he accepts that he loves. Lindsay’s returning love for Adrian is purely selfless. She will sacrifice everything–her happiness, her life, her soul–to keep him safe. That depth of love is a revelation for Adrian, who realizes he has a lot to learn from the mortal he’s fallen in love with.

In “Taking the Heat,” my novella in Men Out of Uniform, Brian has been in love with Layla most of his life. They were together once, but he let her get away, a mistake he’s bitterly regretted. When his career as a deputy marshal throws them back together, he’s determined to find a way to right his past wrongs, and reclaim the only woman he’ll ever love. Layla, however, makes him work for it. 🙂

***okay now for the really cool news we have one copy of Men out of Uniform to give away to one lucky commenter. Just tell us if you have ever read Sylvia, and if not which one of the genres she writes in you would like to try her out in.  Contest rules apply. Contest will end on Thurs Sept 9th***

I haven’t read any paranormal books by her yet, but am very excited about A Touch of Crimson, it sounds awesome. I’m a huge historical romance fan, so I will be reading 7 Years very soon.

I’ve read just about everything Sylvia has written. I adore her historical romances. Until Seven Years to Sin, my favorite was The Stranger I Married. Alistair is such a beautiful man for a relationship. He’s open, honest, and owns the decisions he’s made in his life. What is more attractive than that?

I love Sylvia!! She is a FABULOUS author, and an awesome person :0) I’ve read all her books (inc her Livia Dare book – YUM) except Seven Years to Sin (and ok, I’m not done with A Touch of Crimson yet, I confess – although its not because the book isn’t AWESOME) so hearing Sylvia say that Seven Years to Sin is her fav of her historicals – now I HAVE to get that book!!
Don’t enter me in the contest, I just wanted to have a fangirl moment…LOL
