Sunday Snippet: Undercover by Lauren Dane + giveaway

One of my favorite authors is Lauren Dane. When I discovered her she had a very long back list and I was determined to read it all. I’ve gone from series to series buying and reading her amazing stories. Her Federation/Phantom Corps is one of my favorites of hers. So I’m super excited to share a snippet from the first book in the series Undercover. Lauren is also sponsoring a giveaway of this book, just tell us what it is about Lauren’s books that you love.

Showtime, Sera. Sliding her palms down the silk of the dress, she walked into the main room, waiting for them to notice. It didn’t take long.

Brandt turned to her, lips slightly parted in surprise. “Where’s my drink, darling?” she purred, wearing a sexy smile.

His smile in return was enough to make her stomach flutter. “Don’t you look lovely.” He approached her with predator-like grace. Stopping just shy of touching her, he reached out, his hand cupping the back of her neck and pulled her to his body. She let herself fall into him, the cushion of soft to hard. Lush lips passed over her own gently, just a brush, before letting her go.

“Do you still enjoy ale, Sera?” Ash interrupted, voice brusque.

Shaking off the spell of Brandt’s touch, she turned and nodded as she took the tall glass Ash handed her. She took a few deep swallows to try and get past that kiss.

“Nicely done, Sera. That’s a beautiful color on you,” Brandt murmured, his hand sliding around her waist, cupping her hip possessively. Read more

Summer Reads….and a giveaway

blogger-beach=banner_720x300

I love summer for lots of reasons these are just a few.

1. No Alarm Clocks…oh wait never mind oldest has football practice at 7 am all summer long

2. No schedules to keep

3. I can read all day if I want to…the joys of teenagers they can fend for themselves :)

4. The crazy amount of awesome summer reads that come out.

This summer is no exception. I’ve been blown away by the sheer number of amazing books I’ve been able to read this summer. Some of them I went into with a meh attitude and others I’ve dropped everything to read. Not all of these books are out now, but they will be coming out over the summer. I’m linking them all to their GR page. Also not all of these are what you would consider romance in the usual sense but there is a love story in them.

Nantucket Sisters by Nancy Thayer is one of those meh stories that I fell in love with. It almost has a Beaches theme, but with a HEA for both of the friends. After reading this book I was ready to pack up my family and move there :)

Hotelles by Emma Mars was one that I was curious to read because it takes place in France and you can tell was written by someone very familiar with the French culture and the parts of France in which the story took place. I wasn’t sure how the story was going to end, and while the ending did surprise me, it was a good surprise.

Virgin by Radhika Sanghani I’m only a couple of pages into this book but I have to tell you I’m loving it to so much.

The Best Kind of Trouble by Lauren Dane is the first book in the Hurley Brothers series a spin off from the Delicious and Brown Siblings series. I’m half way through this book and oh my holy heck this book is amazeballs (you will need some cold water and a fan)

Straddling the Line by Jaci Burton is honestly one of those books that I have no words for other than you need to read this book.

Then Came You by Jill Shalvis, all I have to say about this book is this. JILL SHALVIS. ANIMALS. HOT GUYS.

When We Met by Susan Mallery is the story of Angel who we met in the Bodyguard trilogy of Fool’s Gold. This story will break your heart and make you want give Angel a hug.

Flying by Megan Hart. Really what more needs to be said after that?

Empire Girls by Suzanne Hayes and Loretta Nyhan is a good I’ve had on my radar for a while and I can’t wait to be able to read this one. It’s the story of 2 sisters in the 1920′s who’s lives are rocked when their father dies and family secrets are revealed sending them on a journey that will test themselves and their relationship.

Taken With You by Shannon Stacey is another great installment in the Kowalski series. This is the story of Haley and a forest ranger who is very opposite from Haley and I loved every single word.

So here’s a really cool thing that HQN is doing for all there great summer reads (don’t you just love the banner they made for it?) they are giving away an amazing beach bag and books, some of whom are on my summer reads list.

Thoughts: One book with THREE of my favorite authors. This is reading nirvana. I’ve been anxiously awaiting this anthology ever since all three authors told me about it, and did the happy dance for joy when I received my ARC.

All That Remains: I don’t think Lauren has ever written a book that I haven’t loved. In this new series of hers she takes us into the future and a world that has completely changed. I loved the romance between Summer, Charlie and Hatch. There was a lot emotion in this book. Hatch is with Charlie and has been for a few years, and he’s a hundred percent committed to him, and Charlie feels the same way about Hatch, and then he meets Summer and has an instant connection with her. Unbeknownst to him however Hatch and Summer have a past stretching to childhood. Because of this there is a lot to work through, but they do with a result that is awesome.

Rocky Ride: If you’ve never read a Vivian Arend book then you are missing out on of the best contemporary authors writing today. In Rocky Road we get to see Anna Coleman and Mitch Thompson come together. I’ve loved Anna in all the books she’s made an appearance in in the Six Pack Ranch series as she’s a cousin to those Coleman’s. I loved the dynamic between Mitch and Anna and how Mitch wasn’t afraid to go after what he wants, which is Anna.

Beyond Temptation: If you haven’t jumped on the Kit Rocha band wagon, what in the heck are you waiting for. In my opinion this is the best dystopian series being written today. In this story we get to meet Noah who made a brief apperearance in Beyond Jealousy and Emma who has been on the sidelines in the other books. I have to tell this book is HOT. The chemistry between Noah and Emma is sizzling. There are some twists and turns that take place in this story, one that begins to explain what happened in the past, and also what Dallas has up his sleeve. This is one book you won’t want to miss if you’re a fan of this series.

As anthologies go there is almost always one story that doesn’t hold up to the rest as for me. That isn’t the case with this one. I could and will probably read each of these stories over and over again.

There All Along by Lauren Dane and Megan Hart

there all alongTitle: There all Along

  • Land’s End by Lauren Dane
  • By the Sea of Sand by Megan Hart

Genre: Futuristic

Bestselling authors Lauren Dane and Megan Hart deliver two stories of longing, lust, and love in futuristic worlds where love comes first—then survival…

“Land’s End” by Lauren Dane…The Land’s End highway is one of the most dangerous places in the universe. The constant peril of brigands keeps Verity Coleman stuck in Silver Cliffs, dreaming of the open road—and of Loyal Alsbaugh, the tall and silent highway patrolman. When her town is attacked, Verity has a chance to win over Loyal’s muted heart. But will his wounded past make him leave her along the road, or can she convince him to take her along?

“By the Sea of Sand” by Megan Hart…Captain Kason Reed was willing to give his life to the Sheirran Defense Forces, but now he can’t remember anything but bits and pieces of the war. When his sexual attraction to his caregiver, Teila, causes him to make advances toward her, she becomes the aggressor, urging him with her body to explore the memories of his past—memories that all seem to draw him back to Teila…

Thoughts: I’m a huge fan of both Lauren Dane and Megan Hart. I love their writing styles and their characters. I’m a very picky about my futuristic and sci-fi books. I blame this on growing up watching Star Trek and Star Wars. That being said I enjoyed both of these books.

In Lands End by Lauren Dane we meet Verity and Loyal, two people who want more than they have. For years Verity suffered at the hands of her husband, and when he died she was given the freedom to live the way she wanted a life without fear. Now she only wants two things, to leave Lands End and to have Loyal in her bed.

For years Loyal has traveled the Highway protecting  the settlements and the shipments on the road. But for the last couple of years he has looked forward to the stop at Lands End and to staying in Verity’s spare room. She has become his safe place.

The story between Verity and Loyal is one that could happen in any time frame, but really works in this world Dane has created. As Verity and Loyal finally act on their feelings for each other and figure out how to proceed in the tumultuous world they live in. T hey have to contend with a separation as Loyal needs permission for Verity to travel with him, the anger and disapproval of Verity’s family. But the one thing they have going for each other is that they love each other and have faith that everything will work out.

Dane has yet to disappoint me when it comes to her writing and love stories. This one is another that will transport you to a new place, and believe it is completely real.

By the Sea of Sand is probably my favorite of Megan Hart’s love stories. It’s at times heart breaking and yet gives you faith everything will work out the way it’s supposed to.

Teila is a woman who has survived everything the universe has thrown at her, but she isn’t sure she can survive the task her father in law has asked of her. To help the soldier who has just been recovered from their universes biggest enemy. It takes everything in her to not scream at him no. But this soldier is more than just a soldier he’s someone important.

For Kason he isn’t sure what is real and what is a figment of his imagination. The only thing he knows for sure is that the woman caring for him knows more about him than she’s letting on. She wants him to remember on his own for some reason.

One of the things Hart does best is wring every single emotion from you as a reader and also from her characters. This is the case with Teila and Kason and the more you get to know them and discover their story the more you want him to remember who he is, not just for him but also for Teila and her young son.

Cake by Lauren Dane

Author: Lauren Dane

Genre: Contemporary, Red-Hot

She won’t be satisfied with just one bite…

Art student-slash-bike messenger Wren Davis pursues what she wants. And what she wants now is Gregori Ivanov, rock star of the Seattle art scene. With his tattoos, piercings and sensual sneer, Gregori is the ultimate bad boy. Wren’s gotten to know the man beneath the body art, too—and it only makes her crave him more.

But Gregori loves women like he loves cake and champagne—intensely, but only for the moment. And after Wren experiences just how scorching sex with Gregori is, she’s determined to show him that just one taste won’t be enough.

Thoughts: I’m a Lauren Dane junkie I admit it. There have been very few books of hers that I haven’t loved. So when she announced that the hero of this book was an artist I knew I was going to love it. You see many seasons ago I majored in art history and I find artists extremely sexy. Especially Russian artist, though this could be because one of the first romance books I read was Luring the Lady by Nora Roberts and her hero is a Ukranian artist.

Gregori has become one of my favorite of Lauren’s heroes. He’s sexy and moody and temperamental, and um did I mention sexy?

Wren is a heroine who knows what she wants and is not afraid to go after it. Once Gregori changes the dynamics of their relationship she has to make a decision.

I loved every word of this book. The sexual tension and dance that Gregori and Wren go through was off the charts hot. Add in they are both very confident in who they are and what they want, just made it better. I read this book in one sitting and then went back and read it again.

If you’re a fan of Lauren’s then you won’t want to miss this book.

Tattoo artist Raven Smith is blunt and hard, broken and jaded, dark and beautiful. While she doesn’t hide her painful past, she does keep a wall around her heart. She’s free sexually—but no one gets to the real Raven beneath the prickly exterior.
With a voice like smoke, Jonah Warner is a smooth-talking, highly successful attorney, with a body that should never be hidden by a suit. He’s the kind of man who never takes no for an answer and always gets what he wants. And what he wants is Raven. She’s a survivor, and he finds that incredibly alluring.

Thoughts:  This is only the second novel that I have read from Lauren Dane.  I read Laid Bare awhile back, and while it was okay for me, it didn’t really leave me panting for more.  It was good, but not captivating.  The blurb was what caught me into and pulled me to the story but the book didn’t live up to it for me.  I don’t really know why….all the elements of a good story were there….it was original, it had a whole new take on things, the characters were interesting, etc.  But somehow I just failed to fall in love with that book.  So, when I came across this one,  my first question to myself was – did I want to chance reading another one?

I decided to take another chance here and hoped for the best….and in this case I was not disappointed.  The story itself didn’t stand out for me – but the characters did.  And boy, did they stand out!  I absolutely LOVE Raven….she’s strong, honest, blunt, and loyal.  I loved her remark, “My goodness, I already let you see my boobies.”  So funny, so real, so Raven!  She’s just such an amazing character.  She’s been through the fires of hell and is stronger for it.  She’s tough on the outside, yet a sweet marshmallow underneath.  And if you take the time to get to know her, making your way past her gruff exterior, you’ll have a friend for life.  She’s been hurt in the past and she’s messed up in alot of ways because of it….but she doesn’t let it rule her life.  And Jonah was a perfect match for her.  He was determined yet patient, loving yet willing to push her when she needed it, and most of all he was always there for Raven when she needed it.  These two will stand out in my mind for a long time to come.

I loved how Dane captured the essence of these characters.  I loved the ‘realness’ of their actions and responses…and the ‘realness’ of Raven’s fears.  Beyond her gruffness, she was a character that was vulnerable in many ways.  And the way Jonah helped her work through some things  was simply heartbreaking.

My only complaint was the mention of numerous characters from previous books.  For someone not an avid follower of her books, it was a bit distracting from the story itself.  I thought many of the names and characters could have been left out, as they really didn’t pertain to the story at all.  Some of them actually contributed to the character building and/or the plot, but many were unnecessary.  I particularly enjoyed watching Erin rip into Jonah and his brother to protect her friend.  It was a wonderful scene.  I want a friend like that!…:)

Bottom line – the characters are what makes this book.  This book has made me do a complete about-face when it comes to other books by this author.  I’ll be doing some back reading after this!

Sunday Snippet: Drawn Together by Lauren Dane

sunday snippetIf you’re a fan of Lauren Dane’s Brown Siblings series then you know all about Raven, or you think you do because there is so much more to this amazing character. That being said we’re super excited to share a snippet from Drawn Together which comes out on Tuesday. And in case you missed it Heather’s review of Drawn Together posted on Friday, you can check it out here.

Her shrug aimed at nonchalance but most likely failed. “I don’t play games when it comes to sex.”

Usually she said it calmly, but just then he made her feel defensive. Well, no, defensive wasn’t the right word. Like she needed to declare it with her chin jutted out. Or something.

“You don’t? Well, there goes that fantasy.”

She laughed, relaxing.

“Well, there are games and there are games. I like what I like. I’m an adult. I think it’s a waste of time to pretend we aren’t sexually attracted to each other when we are.”

His gaze went hooded.

“All right. I can get on board with that. I want you.”

Heat and cold washed over her. Which was silly. She wasn’t a virgin by any stretch of the imagination. But this sort of desire left her breathless. Giddy. She wasn’t used to this. A slow heat sure. She’d felt that with Brody Brown for a very long time. He was an attractive man who cared about her, and that had been comforting as well as exciting.

But this man . . . well. He wasn’t the long, slow dance that men like Brody Brown were. This man was intense. He stole her breath.

Being so out of sorts and off balance wasn’t something she did well.

Then again, she had no intention of leaving, so to pretend otherwise was ridiculous.

“And I want the Celtic design one. Circles. I like that.”

She would have chosen that one in his place as well. He was a warrior type. Big and braw. Smart. Good lord, she could see the intelligence and cunning in his gaze. Like a wolf, she supposed.

“Nice choice.”

“I feel vindicated that you agree.”

“It’ll look good on you.”

“Why do I get the feeling you’d never allow otherwise?”

“I like my work. I like my reputation. If I cut corners or got sloppy, I’d have neither.”

“That . . . and I think you’re a control freak. Have you ever given any thought to releasing that control?”

His voice had gone low and silky and it sent a shiver through her.

“Are you going to try to convert me now?”

He laughed, but there was more than simple amusement there.

This was foreplay.

“I suppose I’d like to show you my idea of heaven.”

Good lord.

“Do I have to read your pamphlet now? I like candy on Halloween. I like to dance. I particularly enjoy premarital sex.”

He stood, stacking her empty plate on his before carrying them to the sink. “In my religion, you can have all the candy, dancing and sex with me that you can stand.”

“Hm. Well, perhaps conversion is something worth considering.”

Lauren Dane has firmly planted herself on my autobuy/autoread list. She writes characters that fully engage all our emotions.

I’ve loved every single book in this series, and until now Coming Undone has been my absolute favorite book in the series, but this book, it is now tied with that book for my favorite in this series.

Raven has been a character I’ve tolerated from book one, however after reading Drawn Together she is now one of my favorite characters. The reason being, because we finally get the full story of this person and I have to admit now she’s one of my favorite characters. Her story is one that breaks your heart and cheer when she finally gets her HEA.

Jonah has intrigued me ever since he showed up in Cherished. I’ve wanted his story. I have to say he lived up to everything I wanted him to be. Putting his daughter before his own happiness made him that much sexier. His determination to crack the shell around Raven showed that he knew there was more to her and he was willing to put in the work  to make her his.

One of the side stories I was happy was resolved was the marriage of of one of Jonah’s brothers. If you read Cherished you know who I’m talking about. And Jonah’s mom, man she freakin’ rocks. She rules her family, but they all know it’s from a place of love.

This is one of those awesome Lauren Dane books you HAVE to read, especially if you love the Brown Siblings. I will admit I really want Lauren to write the rest of the Warner brother’s stories. And I really hope Jonah’s daughter gets her story some day.

Sunday Snippet: Cake by Lauren Dane

If you follow Lauren on twitter then you know while she was writing Cake she would tease us with one sentence snippets. I have to admit Gregori is full of so much awesomeness he might be one of my favorite of her heroes.

His hair, currently scarlet red, stood up in liberty spikes, but other days he didn’t bother with the full Mohawk effect and he put it in a ponytail to keep it from his eyes. On many it would have looked ridiculous. But on Gregori? It worked. Like really, really worked.

He wore eye protection, but she knew beneath the goggles his eyes were hazel, fringed with sooty lashes usually at half-mast like he was thinking of something particularly dirty.

He worked in jeans so old they bore threadbare spots in all the right places and, though he often went barefoot around the loft, today he wore work boots.

In short, he was a visual buffet. And she was really hungry.

He stalked and paused. Bending to tug on something. Or to grab more tools and sharpen a piece. Wren just watched. Fascinated by the way he created.

It went on this way for another twenty minutes until he finally looked up and noticed her there.

He slid the goggles up, a smile marking his mouth. “Wren. How long have you been here?”

His accent was jagged. Like he was. He spoke in staccato bursts, the sharp twists of his words sliding through the air between them.

“I don’t know. Twenty minutes maybe. Half an hour? I brought some paperwork by and a box. Kelsey says you need to sign the papers in the red envelope and get them back to her.” Kelsey was Wren’s cousin and Gregori’s personal assistant.

He often proclaimed to hate signing things and attending to the business side of his art so she wasn’t surprised when he sighed, taking the goggles and gloves off.

Ignoring the sigh, she stepped closer. “Can I?” Wren tipped her chin toward the sculpture.

He shrugged, pleasure mixing through his annoyance. “Sure.”

She took it in. A man, crouched in the grip of briars and something else she couldn’t make out. The metal was polished in some places, hammered in others. Sharp edges fanned out here and there. “Like flames,” she murmured.

“Yes. Exactly.” He moved closer and his scent caught her attention. Sweat, soap, the product he used in his hair. The fuel from the welding stuff he used. It all married together and became essentially Gregori.

“This is brilliant.” Wren wasn’t flattering. It wasn’t a lie. He was a genius. One of those rare few who not only made a living at what he did, but had ascended to art celebrity.

He made a sound. A growl of sorts. “It’s missing something.” They both looked at it for some time longer until he sighed. “Come have tea with me.”

He issued the invitation like a command. He tended to be imperious at times. But she rarely took him seriously, so she let it wash over her and perhaps might even have liked it. A little bit.

cakeShe won’t be satisfied with just one bite…

Art student-slash-bike messenger Wren Davis pursues what she wants. And what she wants now is Gregori Ivanov, rock star of the Seattle art scene. With his tattoos, piercings and sensual sneer, Gregori is the ultimate bad boy. Wren’s gotten to know the man beneath the body art, too—and it only makes her crave him more.

But Gregori loves women like he loves cake and champagne—intensely, but only for the moment. And after Wren experiences just how scorching sex with Gregori is, she’s determined to show him that just one taste won’t be enough
