Bridgertons…some thoughts

Like all romance fans when it was announced that Shonda Rimes, the woman who gave us Merideth Grey and Olivia Pope was making a series out of Julia Quinn’s Bridgertons series I screamed in excitement. How many of us sat at conferences and talked about having one of our favorite series turned into t.v. series. I’ll be honest I expected it to be Eve and Roarke…but really how could play Roarke…but that’s a discussion for another day.

With each new update about the show I got more and more excited. It had been years since I read The Duke and I, the book season one is based on. But I remember loving how Simon and Daphne fell in love. Was it perfect? No. Did they both make mistakes? Yes. But the thing I remembered most about this book and the books that followed was that and the end of the day all that Lady Bridgerton wanted was for each of her children to find the love that she’d found with their father.

Then all of the drama, I’m using the word drama because I can’t think of another word to use in it’s place, happened and I was suddenly torn. In the book Simon isn’t black. But he is still violated. How could I as the mom of a a young black man, watch and support this show. So I waited. I made excuses when people asked me if I’d watched it. And I asked him and his brother to watch it. Both of them said NO! So I made the decision to not watch that episode. I knew what was going to happen, I’ve read the book several times, and didn’t need to see it acted out.

I’m glad I waited until summer break to watch it though so that I could binge watch it all at once. It was everything I wanted in the telling of this story and so much more. And the way they’ve set up for the next books I can’t wait.

As for everyone being upset that Simon isn’t in season 2 you really should go read the books because if I remember correctly he wasn’t in the book very much. And I’m really hoping that we get to see some of the crocket games that the family play because in the books they look like so much fun!

So if you’re looking for fun, sexy, binge watch then you will want to watch this show if you haven’t already!
