Series: Vampire Queen bk 9
Author: Joey W. Hill
Genre: Erotic Paranormal
Groomed from birth to be an Inherited Servant and serve only the most powerful vampire Masters, Alanna never resented her destiny. Then she did the unthinkable: she betrayed her Master to the Vampire Council. Now death is her future, but until her Master is captured, she must be protected. The Vampire Council assigns her to Evan, a vampire whose wandering lifestyle makes him the perfect guardian
Alanna’s training was for a vampire of power and ambition, not for someone like Evan who lives in mountainside shacks and caves. Even his servant, Niall, is rough mannered. But these two men are about to teach Alanna something her rigorous training never did: how to feel, how to desire perhaps even how to love.
Then the Council captures her Master, and Alanna has no choice but to accept her destiny. But Evan and Niall are no strangers to defying fate—and they will stop at nothing to make Alanna theirs forever.
I was going through my to be reviewed pile and saw this book. As I was in a paranormal mood and hadn’t ever read this author before I thought what the heck and picked it up. First it is NOTHING like any of the vampire books I have ever read before. I tend to stick to authors like Lynsay Sands, Kerrelyn Sparks with J.R. Ward being the darkest vampire books I read. So I wasn’t really prepared for Hill’s vampires.
From the beginning of the story I was intrigued about these three characters. Alanna who has been trained since she was child about what it means to serve a vampire and has very definite ideas about that service. Then there’s Evan who is an artist as well as a vampire and has his own ideas about service and people, and lives in his own mind much of the time. Add in Niall a servant who doesn’t behave like Alanna thinks he should and yet has the relationship she has always wanted with her Master.
This story was so different from any vampire world book I’d read I honestly didn’t know what to think. But because it was so different it kept me glued to the books so much I ignored everything and kept reading. I wanted to know what was going to happen to this trio. Were Evan and Niall going to be able to help Alanna discover who she really was. Were they going to be able to save her life. Then there was the relationship between Evan and Niall, how was that going to be resolved would these two men get their HEA, and what was going to happen to them if Alanna died.
This is the 9th book in the series and I have to admit that while I liked this book, I wasn’t invested in the world enough to want to go back and read the previous 8 books in the series. If you’re a fan of this series you won’t want to miss this book. If you’re looking for something new to try give this book a try. I didn’t feel like I was missing anything in the world for not having read the first 8 books.
