Title: Dead Heat
Series: Alpha and Omega Book #4
Author: Patricia Briggs
Genre: Paranormal/Sci-fi/Fantasy
Blurb: For once, mated werewolves Charles and Anna are not traveling because of Charles’s role as his father’s enforcer. This time, their trip to Arizona is purely personal, as Charles plans to buy Anna a horse for her birthday. Or at least it starts out that way…
Charles and Anna soon discover that a dangerous Fae being is on the loose, replacing human children with simulacrums. The Fae’s cold war with humanity is about to heat up—and Charles and Anna are in the cross fire.
Thoughts: Patricia Briggs is one of my absolute favorite authors and I was so excited to get an ARC for Dead Heat, the fourth book in the Alpha and Omega series featuring werewolves Charles and Anna. Of course, I expected to like it – it’s Patricia Briggs – and while it’s not quite as good as her Mercy Thompson series (at least for me), it is very close up there. However, I was surprised at how much I loved this book. This is my absolute favorite Charles and Anna book – and it has me seriously thinking now that it might just give the Mercy Thompson series a run for its money!
This story – WOW! – I was captivated from the beginning. Charles gets a call from an old friend – one he hasn’t seen in far too long – and he and Anna go there to visit, in part so Charles can get Anna a horse for her birthday, partly so he can say goodbye to an old friend before time runs out for them (as Joseph is human), and also in part to distract Anna from the subject of having a family. Yet, once they arrive we learn a lot of intricacies behind Joseph, Charles, and his family – a lot of undercurrents going on there! – and we also have Joseph’s daughter-in-law who gets attacked by a Fae and the grandchildren almost killed. There turns out to be a lot more going on with the story than there seems at first, and Charles and Anna may be up against one of their toughest challenges yet!
I enjoyed this story immensely – my favorite of the Alpha and Omega books yet! Loved it and can’t wait for more!!
