Agnes and the Hitman by Jennifer Cruise & Bob Mayer

Title:Agnes and the Hitman

Author:  Jennifer Crusie and Bob Mayer

Genre: Contemporary

Take one food writer named Cranky Agnes, add a hitman named Shane, mix them together with a Southern mob wedding, a missing necklace, two annoyed flamingos, and a dog named Rhett and you’ve got a recipe for a sexy, hilarious novel about the disastrous side of true love…
Agnes Crandall’s life goes awry when a dognapper invades her kitchen one night, seriously hampering her attempts to put on a wedding that she’s staked her entire net worth on.  Then a hero climbs through her bedroom window.  His name is Shane, no last name, just Shane, and he has his own problems:  he’s got a big hit scheduled, a rival trying to take him out, and an ex-mobster uncle asking him to protect some little kid named Agnes.  When he finds out that Agnes isn’t so little, his uncle has forgotten to mention a missing five million bucks he might have lost in Agnes’s house, and his last hit was a miss, Shane’s life isn’t looking so good, either.  Then a bunch of lowlifes come looking for the money, a string of hit men show up for Agnes, and some wedding guests gather with intent to throw more than rice.  Agnes and Shane have their hands full with greed, florists, treachery, flamingos, mayhem, mothers of the bride, and—most dangerous of all—each other.  Agnes and the Hitman is the perfect combination of sugar and spice, sweet and salty—a novel of delicious proportions.

If you like murder, mobsters, meat forks and mayhem you will LOVE this book as much as I did.  Agnes and the Hitman is a roller coaster ride from start to finish.  This book in one word is hilarious and it will be one book that I will soon not forget.  So much stuff goes on in this book that it’s hard to cover it all without spoiling it.  If you are a fan of the Stephanie Plum books this is like a steak to Stephanie’s olive and peanut butter sandwich.  The writing is superb and the action is non stop.

I’m a fan of Crusie – she always has zany characters, so I’m guessing Bob Mayer’s contribution to this book is all the murdering.  Just a note:  in this book you will find, shootings, meat forks to the throat, old men getting run over, and everyone getting hit to the head with a frying pan.  If you don’t care for dead bodies piling up then this is not the book for you.  But hey, what do you expect when a book is full of old mobsters and their family.

To end my review –I have to say that Shane is probably one of the best hero’s that I’ve read about in a long time.  He’s a hitman – enough said!

The Cinderella Deal by Jennifer Cruise

Title: The Cinderella Deal                                        Author: Jennifer Crusie                                               Genre: Contemporary

Daisy Flattery is a free spirit with a soft spot for strays and a weakness for a good story. Why else would she agree to the outrageous charade offered by her buttoned-down workaholic neighbor, Linc Blaise? The history professor needs a makeshift fiancée to secure his dream job, and Daisy needs a short-term gig to support her painting career. And so the Cinderella Deal is born: Daisy will transform herself into Linc’s prim-and-proper fiancée, and at the stroke of midnight they will part ways, no glass slippers attached. But something funny happens on their way to make-believe bliss, as a fake engagement unexpectedly spirals into an actual wedding. Now, with Linc and Daisy married and under one roof, what started as a game begins to feel real—and the people who seem so wrong for each other realize they may truly be just right.

Crusie is my go to author for quirky characters and different Heroes and Heroines.   I will pick up one of her books when I just want something good to read.  I’ve been in a weird reading mood lately so instead of grabbing a new book to review and read, I got one of Crusie’s backlist books from the library.  Wow, don’t know why it took me so long to read this one.

This book has the tall, dark straight laced hero, and the free spirited, artist for a heroine.  I LOVED the fairy tale theme of Cinderella.  In this book it has one of my favorite themes – the “H/H  are forced  to marry but not really know each other.”  I usually see this in historical books, so I just love it when I come across it in contemporary.  At first Linc is embarrassed of Daisy’s clothes, her weirdness and messy ways.  She can’t stand his Darth Vader Black car, black clothes and modern furniture .  They are total opposites – but they just work.  She gets him to relax a little when she brings home a one eyed crippled dog, and he gets her to organize her life and start painting again.

This was a quick read of just under 300 pages.  I recommend picking this one up on a Sunday morning  to read for the day.  I laughed out loud and also shed a tear or two.

A Perfect Blood by Kim Harrison

Title: A Perfect Blood

Series: The Hollows bk 10

Author: Kim Harrison

Ritually murdered corpses are appearing across Cincinnati, terrifying amalgams of human and other. Pulled in to help investigate by the I.S. and the FIB, former witch turned day-walking demon Rachel Morgan soon realizes a horrifying truth: a human hate group is trying to create its own demons to destroy all Inderlanders, and to do so, it needs her blood.

She’s faced vampires, witches, werewolves, demons, and more, but humanity itself might be her toughest challenge yet.

This series is an auto buy for me – it’s probably my favorite Urban Fantasy series that I’ve read.  So this review is basically a plug for the whole series, and not just this one book. (This book is #10 in The Hollows Series).

Let me give you a back ground of the characters and why I love this series so much.  Rachel Morgan is an Earth Witch, her roommate, Ivy  is a bi-sexual living vampire and they live in an old church.  Their business partner is a pixie named Jenks.  He has 55 or more kids!  Basically I would read this series just for Jenks himself.  The characters in this series are so complex and flawed.  You get to know and love them in each book.  There are two bad guys that you love to hate – a demon named Big Al, and a business man, Trent Kalamack (it’s not revealed what he is right away).  In each book there is adventure and the trio is usually in some kind of a mess.

If you have read the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher – just picture a female Harry Dresden, that’s Rachel.  I think I like this series more because Rachel works with Jenks and Ivy.  This last installment is really good with new bad guys that they haven’t come up against yet.  My understanding is that there are only 3 books left in the series.  I’m looking forward to reading them – but will be heartbroken and sad when no new books will be released.

If you are looking for a new Urban Fantasy series to start – pick this one up.  Believe me you will not be disappointed.  Disclaimer:  after I read the first book I didn’t think I would read the rest in the series.  A good friend of mine talked me into picking back up the series.  SOOOO glad I did!  I think the first book is hard to get into a little and it’s world building.  I have reread the first book and got so much more out of it.  With each book the series just gets better and better.  The characters grow and change and you just can’t get enough.  Out of the 10 books Pale Demon is by far the best one.    Oh, and you can’t go wrong with books that are titled after old Clint Eastwood movies, right?

Seduction by Brenda Joyce

Title: Seduction

Series: The Spymaster’s Men bk 1

Author: Brenda Joyce

Genre: Historical

Badly wounded, he is put will do anything in the care of a beautiful gentlewoman, Julianne Greystone, only to discover that her sympathies lie with his enemies. Yet he can’t help but seduce the woman who saved his life—hoping she never learns of his betrayal.

Julianne is captivated by the wounded stranger she believes is a revolutionary hero. Until she discovers the truth…her “hero” is the privileged earl of Bedford. Devastated and determined to forget him, Julianne travels to London. But when she finds herself in danger, it is Bedford who comes to the rescue. Now Julianne must navigate the intrigues of a perilous city, the wild yearnings of her own heart and the explosion of their passion….

I LOVE, LOVE Brenda Joyce’s books, she’s my go to author for rereads on her De Warenne and Deadly series books.  This book is the start of a new series for her, so I jumped at the change to read it early and review it.

This book had some great “history” lessons in it.  I had to Google what a Jacobin was and other info on the French Revolution.  I eat this kind of stuff up, especially if it has hot romance in it.  My knowledge on French Revolution is next to null, and now I feel I could give a brief description of it if I have to.   This part of the book deserves an A+.

Ok, now on to why I can’t give this entire book an A.  The Heroine – why oh why does Brenda Joyce write some of the most annoying heroines?  She’s so innocent and naïve that she comes across as TSTL.  Joyce’s heroines have bothered me in other books, but her heroes are usually “To Die For” that it makes up for it.  Not in this book.   The hero Dominic Paget is an Earl, pretending to be a spy, pretending to be a French Soldier.  Ugg, the misunderstandings and lies between these two went on through the whole book.  I guess in my reading I’ve moved beyond the great misunderstanding that carries throughout romance books.  Another thing that bothered me was that Julianne’s two knuckled headed brothers left her and her sister alone at the estate with a man for weeks.  That was just unbelievable for the time.

I’m going to give this book a B-.  The reason, Joyce is still one of my favorite authors, who’s writing style is flawless at times and toward the end I was glued to my Kindle.  I will also continue and read the books in this new series.  Which I’m guessing are going to be around Julianne’s lovable but knuckled headed brothers.

Deadly Vows by Brenda Joyce

Title: Deadly Vows

Series: Deadly Series bk 9

Author: Brenda Joyce

Genre: Historical

On the morning of her wedding to Calder Hart, amateur sleuth Francesca Cahill is lured away to a private viewing of a portrait that could destroy her entire family: the nude Hart commissioned of her. Her desperate quest to recover the scandalous portrait leads her into a dangerous trap with no way to escape—until it’s too late. And when Francesca finally arrives at the church, it’s vacant. She has unintentionally jilted Hart at the altar.

When Hart tells her their estrangement is for the best, Francesca is devastated. With a blackmailer intent on destroying her reputation, Francesca turns to Rick Bragg, the city’s powerful police commissioner. Together they scour the sordid streets of lower Manhattan, following a deliberately laid trail of clues in a race against the clock. And once it becomes clear that Bragg’s marriage is failing, Francesca must war with her feelings for him, battle Hart’s jealousy and escape a killer—all as she fights to win Hart back. But sometimes, passion just cannot be denied….

First off I’m writing this review to spread the word about this Deadly Series – so it covers my thoughts on all 9 books.

I owe my romance reading comeback to Brenda Joyce.  I took a break from reading romance in the early 90’s for a few years.  I picked up a Brenda Joyce novel in about 1995 and I’ve been on reading romance frenzy since.

This Deadly series actually has everything that I hate in a romance novel – BUT IT WORKS SO WELL in these books.  There is a love triangle (hate), misunderstanding between H/H (really hate) and TSTL Heroine (totally hate).  Brenda Joyce has made it work so well, that I’ve read these books twice.

The “who done it” in each book is actually a non event in my opinion.  But I really didn’t read this series for the mystery.  The characters are what brings readers back for each book.  Francesca is an amateur private eye who’s always getting kidnapped, shot at and other dastardly stuff.  She usually runs off on her own and is ether saved by Rick Bragg or his half brother Calder Hart.  So much stuff happens through out this series that you just can’t wait to read the next book.

In the first book you come to love police commissioner Rick Bragg – but wait until his brother, Calder Hart is introduced.  Wow – hands down he is one of my FAVORITE heroes ever written.  He’s so alpha, strong, damaged, sexy, hot, angry etc, etc…….  I would read this series again and again just to read about Hart.

If you are looking for something different in historical romance – I would take a look at this series.  One word of caution – the first book is kind of frustrating  and I almost didn’t pick up the second book.  Someone is introduced at the end of the first book and it made me continue.  So glad I did, because now I have a series that I will cherish and reread (and recommend to all of my reading friends).

The Rogue Pirates Bride by Shana Galen

Title: The Rogue Pirate’s Bride

Series: The Sons of Revolution

Author: Shana Galen

Genre: Historical Romance

Revenge should be sweet, but it may cost him everything…

The Marquis de Valère escaped certain death in the French Revolution and is now an infamous privateer. Out to avenge the death of his mentor, Bastien discovers himself astonishingly out of his depth when confronted with a beautiful, daring young woman who is out for his blood…

Forgiveness is unthinkable, but it may be her only hope…

British Admiral’s daughter Raeven Russell believes Bastien responsible for her fiancé’s death. But once the fiery beauty crosses swords with Bastien, she’s not so sure she really wants him to change his wicked ways…

This book was a pleasant surprise – so glad I picked it up to read.  First off, I loved the beginning scenes with Bastien and Raeven.  Very witty, cute a funny.  She’s bound and determined to take revenge on him for supposedly killing her fiancé.  She dresses herself as a man and challenges him to a sword fight.  Then her hat falls off and Bastien is in instant lust.  Raeven came across as a strong, independent and caring heroine.  She was raised by her dad on a ship her whole life, so she does have a tom boy feel to her.

Bastien is not your average pirate.  Of course he has a hidden or secret identity.  It plays out well in this book and leaves room for more books with connecting characters.  Loved his rugged yet aristocratic flair to his personality.  The scene with him and Raeven at the ball when they are running from Bastien’s enemy was my favorite of this book.

There was a small lull for me of about 30 pages or so in the middle.  Otherwise this book read very smoothly and was a quick nice read.  Most of the book is set on Bastien’s ship – which was a great setting.  I haven’t read a pirate book in a while, so this was a nice one to pick up after a long pirate free reading span.   I will be looking to read more books by Shana Galen in the near future.

How to Worship a Goddess by Stephanie Julian

Title: How to Worship a Goddess

Series: The Forgotten Goddess bk 2

Author: Stephanie Julian

Genre: Paranormal

HE’S EXACTLY WHAT SHE’S ALWAYS WANTED…

Lucy was once the beloved Goddess of the Moon. These days the goddesses of the Etruscan pantheon are all but forgotten. The only rituals she enjoys now are the local hockey games, where one ferociously handsome player inflames her divine blood…

AND SHE UNLEASHES HIM LIKE A FORCE OF NATURE…

Brandon Stevenson is one hundred percent focused on the game, until he looks up and sees a celestial beauty sitting in the third row. A man could fall hard for a distraction like that…

This is a hard review for me to write.  Basically I didn’t connect with this book and I really like this author, so I feel bad for giving it a not so great review.

When I first started reading it, I thought “wow I’m really loving this”.  The hero is a hockey player (I love books centered around sports) and the chemistry between Brandon and Lucy was off the charts hot.  It read like a hot contemporary romance with a little paranormal thrown in.  So I was really digging it – up to about page 200.  Then some funky stuff goes down with Brandon  – I don’t want to say what as a spoiler, but this is where the book took a bad turn for me.

I felt that I was missing something – I did not read the first book in this series, and usually that doesn’t matter.  So maybe that’s it, I thought?  I didn’t read the first book so I’m out of the loop.  It wasn’t it…..  It just kind of didn’t flow smoothly anymore and I couldn’t wait for the book to be over.  Usually when I’m reading erotic I will skim over some of the sex scenes to get back to the story.  Well it was the opposite in this book – I skimmed the story and stopped and read the sex scenes very slowly.  Stephanie Julian does know how to write a great sex scene.

I have not given up on this author – she’s been a great go to author for well written paranormal erotic for me.  I just wasn’t feeling this book.

Fury by Laurann Dohner

Title: Fury

Series: New Species

Author: Laurann Dohner

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Book 1 in the New Species series. Ellie is horrified to discover the pharmaceutical company she works for is doing illegal experiments. Company scientists have spliced human and animal DNA, creating exotic new species. One such “experiment” captures her heart and she’ll do anything to save him—even if he hates her for it. Fury has never known compassion or love. He’s spent his life in a cell, chained and abused by humans. The one woman he allowed himself to trust betrayed him. Now he’s free and set on vengeance. He vows to end her life but when she’s finally in his grasp, harming her is the last thing he wants to do to the sexy little human. Fury can’t resist Ellie—the touch of her hands, her mouth on his skin, her body wrapped around his. He’s obsessed with the scent of his woman. And Ellie wants Fury—always has. She craves his big, powerful body and wants to heal his desolate heart.  But loving Fury is one thing…taming him is another. Reader Advisory: This story contains the heartrending aftermath of a rape scene involving a captive male. Another scene involves capture and forced touching by a hurt, vengeful Fury.

When I first started reading this book the first thing I thought of that it had a Lora Leigh Breeds type feel to it.  After reading it a bit further – the book ended up having its own flair to it, and I wanted to keep reading.

Ellie works in the lab that holds Fury and performs experiments and other horrors on the New Species.  The New Species is a mix of part human and part animal.  The New Species have been mixed with everything from domestic cat and dog to other wild animals.  At the beginning of the book Fury is being assaulted by another male – there is a disclaimer at the beginning of the book on this rape scene.  I did not have a problem with this scene – but for other readers it might be a little disturbing.

My likes with this book are:

  1. Fury – total Alpha Male who has eyes only for Ellie.  Even though he has issues with her from when she worked at the lab.
  2. The New Species themselves – animal tendencies with human looks.
  3. The world that is built by Dohner – pretty good start to an interesting series.

My dislikes are:

  1. The bad guys – they were one dimensional and kind of hill billyish.  Even the nurse at the end was just weird.  Ellie and Fury should have sent her packing from the minute they saw her.
  2. The world building could have been more detailed.  The book just starts out with the assault scene, and then moves on from there.  We don’t know what all really happened while they were in the lab or even how they were created or born.
  3. No matter what – this series will be compared to Lora Leigh’s Breed series.  It might be a plus for the author’s book sales, but she might get some bad reviews because of it.

I read this book in about 2 days – which means that it held my interest and I wanted to keep reading.  The sex scenes are good, but not spectacular.  I will be reading the next book in this series, but if it stays with the same formula – I will move on.

Holiday Hideout by Vicki Lewis Thompson, Jill Shalvis and Julie Kenner

Title: Holiday Hideout

Anthology

Authors, Vicki Lewis Thompson, Jill Shalvis, Julie Kenner

Genre: Harlequin Category Romance, Contemporary Romance

The Thanksgiving Fix by Vicki Lewis Thompson Finding Mr. Right is the furthest thing from Beth Davis’s mind when the Reno professor takes Thanksgiving break at a colleague’s Lake Tahoe cabin. Until Coinneach McFarland arrives to fix a suspicious leak. It looks like somebody’s playing matchmaker for two people sworn to stay single. But as things heat up, Beth is astonished to find she has discovered her soul mate just as she’d given up looking.

The Christmas Set-Up by Jill Shalvis Competing architects Zoe and Jason has two weeks to come up with the design to win a coveted new project. But when a snowstorm strands them together at a secluded cabin, Zoe sees her chance to show Jason how she really feels. With romance blooming under the mistletoe, can she get the gorgeous Scrooge into the true Christmas spirit?

The New Year’s Deal by Julie Kenner Five years ago, Cleo Daire and Josh Goodson said goodbye and went their separate ways. But first they made a promise to reunite. Now the ex-lovers are spending New Year’s Eve in a romantic cabin, where passion takes them by surprise and long-wished-for dreams can sometimes come true.

I picked up this anthology because I’ve really enjoyed reading the Harlequin Anthologies especially when Jill Shalvis has a short story in them.  Well, unfortunately this one fell short.  I finished it 2 days ago and I really can’t even remember the characters names let alone what happened in each story.  Basically the setting is the same mountain cabin that has the reputation of having couples fall in love or rekindle a love lost.  Each couple ends up in the cabin over either the Christmas or New Year’s Eve Holiday.    The concept was really a good idea – but the stories were just kind of boring.

The Thanksgiving Fix by VLT was the one I liked the least.  It was kind of slow reading and the heroine just didn’t sit well with me.  Having said that, this is the story that I remember the most.  Beth is an all career women and Mac is the local handy man.  I guess the only good thing about this story was Mac – but he just seemed too good to be true.  There also was some weird dialog that was going on between the couple while they were getting it on.  It just seemed out of place.  I’m actually a big fan of VLT, but this story seemed rushed.  Grade: C-

The Christmas Set-Up by Jill Shalvis was the story that I liked the best, but it was not the Jill Shalvis I know and love.  The couple both work in the same architect firm and they are set up by their co-workers to spend the weekend in the cabin.  They get snowed in, have sex and finish a project for work.  Yep – that’s about it.   Grade: C+

The New Year’s Deal by Julie Kenner, I started out really liking this story, but I think the heroine killed it for me.  She’s a lawyer (enough said, right?).  This couple was college sweethearts and they broke up when he wouldn’t follow her to graduate college.  When they broke up he made a pack with her to meet him 5 years later on New Year’s Eve.  He has never forgotten her and still wants to be with her.  She basically goes to the cabin to get him to be an expert witness for a big case she is working on.  That’s what killed it for me.   I do have to say that I do like Julie Kenner’s writing style and this story was probably the best written out of the 3.  Grade: C

Bring Me Home for Christmas by Robyn Carr

Bring Me Home for Christmas

Series: Virgin River bk 16

by Robyn Carr

Genre: Contemporary Romance

This year, Becca Timm knows the number one item on her Christmas wish list—getting over Denny Cutler. Three years ago, Denny broke her heart before heading off to war. It’s time she got over her silly high-school relationship and moved on.

So she takes matters into her own hands and heads up to Virgin River, the rugged little mountain town that Denny calls home, as an uninvited guest on her brother’s men-only hunting weekend. But when an accident turns her impromptu visit into an extended stay, Becca finds herself stranded in Virgin River. With Denny. In very close quarters.

As the power of Christmas envelops the little town, Becca discovers that the boy she once loved has become a strong and confident man. And the most delicious Christmas present she can imagine.

Robyn Carr is my Nora Roberts of romance, my go to author for a good book where you feel at home with the writing style and characters.  I was super lucky to meet Robyn at RomCon this year and she gave me an ARC of this book.  Personally Robyn is a super classy, funny lady who adores and loves her fans.  I was going to save this book for a snowy weekend to read, but just couldn’t wait and read it in September.

This is Denny and Becca’s story – for the readers who have read all of the Virgin Riverbooks Denny is the kid that his dying mom told him Jack was his dad.  Denny’s been in Virgin Riverfor awhile working at Jillian’s Farm and Jack’s bar.  He did two separate tours in the war, and before going back the 2nd time he broke things off from his long time love Becca.

Becca plots to go toVirgin Riverwith her brother to try and resolve things with Denny so she can move on with her life and boyfriend.  Becca breaks her ankle and is forced to stay inVirgin Riverlonger than her planned week stay. (I’m a huge sucker for stranded storylines).  While staying in VR, she gets involved with the Christmas pageant and starts to help the kids with afterschool homework.  She is an unemployed teacher, so this is her passion.

I think what I liked most about his book was first – no misunderstandings between Denny and Becca.  When they had something to say, they said it and dealt with it.  Second – I loved Becca’s mom.  At first I thought she was going to be written a different way and was pleasantly surprised with how supportive and loving she was with Becca.

Of course many of the previous characters make appearances in this book but the best thing about it is that it can be read as a stand alone.  In my opinion you don’t have to read all of theVirgin Riverbooks to enjoy this book.
