Blurb: THE AWAKENING
In a post-apocalyptic wasteland,
civilization no longer exists, and only the strongest survive. The few
remaining humans must band together with supernatural beings to battle
unspeakable evil—or all hope will be lost.
Kimber Treat is an ordinary woman with an extraordinary gift: she can raise the
dead. As a necromancer who works with the police, she communicates with murder
victims to bring their killers to justice. But after a normal session goes
horribly wrong, Kimber realizes she’s summoned something dark and sinister.
She’s unwittingly unleashed the apocalypse, and everyone blames her . . .
except Duncan MacDonnough, the devastatingly handsome vampire she can’t stop
fantasizing about.
As society shuts down and flesh-eating hordes close in, Duncan vows to protect
Kimber. He can keep her safe from others—but not from the insatiable carnal
hunger he feels for her. Now racing to reverse the chaos she’s unleashed,
Kimber can’t afford any distractions. But even as she succumbs to Duncan’s
seduction, she fears that he has a hidden agenda. And with the line between
life and death starting to blur, his secrets might kill her-or worse . . .
Favorite quote(s)/excerpt(s): “Duncan, I’m sorry. But you keep me so off-kilter, and then drag me into your bedroom….I’m sorry,” she said yet again. “I jumped to conclusions.”
“Yes, you did.” He did turn then, his gaze steady on hers. “Though I will have you in that bed, Kimber. Soon.”
Thoughts: This was a fascinating and interesting book. Kimber is a necromancer – one who is still discovering her full power. In this world, she works with the police to raise the dead for investigative purposes. This time, something goes wrong – things don’t feel quite right to Kimber. Next thing you know, bam! Zombie apocalypse. Meanwhile, the Queen of the local vampire seethe has been trying to requisition Kimber for a job, but due to her past history and trauma, Kimber wants nothing to do with the vampire Queen. She can’t seem to stay away from Duncan, however, and vice versa. They have both been drawn to each other for years, and the current zombie situation only pushes them closer together.
As a reader, you are immediately caught up in this world, and the more you read the more you want to see where it goes. I enjoyed the characters and just the unique way things were written. It is just a fascinating kick-off for a new series. Can’t wait to see where things go from here!
