One day, Callie Vanetta receives devastating news. She needs a liver transplant. But her doctors warn that, in her case, the chances of finding a compatible donor aren’t good.Determined to spend whatever time she has left on her own terms, she keeps the diagnosis to herself and moves out to her late grandparents’ farm. She’s always wanted to live there. But the farm hasn’t been worked in years and she begins to fear it’s too much, she’ll have to return to town. One night, a stranger comes knocking at her door…He’s an attractive and mysterious drifter by the name of Levi McCloud who offers to trade work for a few nights’ shelter. Callie figures she doesn’t have anything to lose. He needs a place to stay until he can fix his motorcycle; she needs an extra pair of hands. The arrangement seems ideal until what was supposed to be temporary starts to look more and more permanent. Then she realizes she does have something to lose — her heart. And, although he doesn’t yet know it, Levi stands to lose even more.
This series is fast becoming my favorite series by Brenda Novak. I love the setting, the characters and the friendship between all of the friends.
I honestly thought I was going to struggle getting into this book, however by the end of the first chapter I was completely intrigued not by Callie but by Levi. I wanted to know his back story, who he was, why he was the way he was etc. As Callie and Levi became friends and then lovers it seemed like a natural progression, almost seemless.
Both of them have their baggage, and Levi’s is pretty intense and very typical I would say of a lot men his age who have been to Iraq and Afghanistan. Callie’s stems from the pressure of being an only child and also hiding the secret she is dying.
There was some things that bugged my about the story while I was reading it, however by the time I was done reading I honestly couldn’t remember what they were. I just know they were there.
There is a lot going on in this book, in regards to the other’s in Callie’s group of friends. We find out what really happened to end Kyle’s marriage (he’s the groom in the first book When We Touch) and also we find out more about Baxter and what’s going on with him. We also discover a little bit more about Sophie/a (I can’t remember which way her name is) and why Ted is so angry with her, and also what she’s hiding. I have a feeling about her story line and am curious to find out if what I suspect is true.
Overall it’s a great addition to the series and I’m looking for to seeing more from this series.
