Series: Alpha Pack bk 6
Author: J.D. Tyler
Genre: Paranormal
A top secret team of wolf shifters, the Alpha Pack are former Navy SEALS that use their Psy powers to take on the world’s greatest predators. But while each member is loyal to the pack, it can be hard to deny the call of desire…
Still tormented by his recent captivity, Alpha Pack commander Nick Westfall isn’t sure he’s fit to lead—especially when he meets the one woman he can’t claim without reliving the torture he endured at the hands of a rogue vampire.
Vampire princess Calla Shaw has seen her own share of heartbreak, but she can tell that the wild attraction she and Nick feel for each other could turn into something significant—if only he’d let it. But Calla isn’t about to give up on her mate without a fight.
Time is running out, not only for Nick to claim his mate, but for Calla and her coven. A vampire war is on the horizon, one the Alpha Pack can’t hope to win if their leader can’t pull himself back from the abyss.
Thoughts: This series a real hit and miss for me. Some books I’ve loved and other’s I’ve been very meh about. This was one I loved.
Nick and Calla are mates, they both know it and where one is ready to start a relationship the other wants nothing to do with it. Except they can’t stay away from each other.
I really enjoyed the struggles this couple went through. Both of them have lost their mates, but where Calla is ready to move on, Nick wants nothing to do with it. Not because he isn’t attracted to Calla, but because of what she is.
He can’t get past the fact that she’s a vampire. He doesn’t have anything against vampires, he counts a lot of them as allies. But he’s recently been held captive and tortured by one. The very idea of letting her bond with him the way she will need to is abhorrent to him. Calla isn’t willing to push him, she’s determined to wait for him to come to terms with it, without telling him something really, vitally important.
Calla on the other hand, never expected to find a mate again. She loved her mate and was devastated when she lost him. So the fact she’s found one again throws her, but also gives her hope. It doesn’t hurt that her brother respects Nick, and counts him as an ally. She understands that Nick might have an issue with her being a vampire, and is willing to give him time, especially as he knows he’s her mate. When he rejects the very thing that is essential in all mated vampire pairs, she determines that she won’t give up on him, them. She never plans on their enemies using their mating as a way to destroy not just them, but everyone they love.
One of the things I enjoy so much about paranormal romances is that you know the struggle between the hero and heroine is going to be more than the typical relationship struggles you find in contemporary and historical romances. In this case you have a wolf shifter whose mate is a vampire and while he wants her, and has very deep feelings for her, he can’t get past what she is.
I’m really liking the world that Tyler has created, and can’t wait to see what she does next. There are so many characters in this world I want to see more of.
