Series:  Deadly Ops Book #3

Author:  Katie Reus

Genre:  Romantic Suspense

Blurb:   When his wife was murdered two years ago, Special Agent Levi Lazaro turned his back on everything he cared about. Ever since, he has thought of nothing but vengeance. Now he’s finally uncovered the identities of those who killed his wife—and he’s ready to destroy them at any cost. He won’t let anything stand in his way—not even a beautiful NSA agent on a mission of her own.

Special Agent Selene Wolfe prides herself on being the best. Her fearlessness and quick-thinking make her the perfect person to take down a deadly terrorist cell. But she needs Levi’s help, and the moment he shows up, Selene knows her objectivity—and her heart—are in trouble.

As the two strike an uneasy alliance, Levi finds himself tormented by his desire for Selene—a feeling he thought long dead. But when their mission takes an unexpected turn, he finds himself at a crossroads. Can he put aside his need for revenge to save the woman who’s reawakened his soul?

Thoughts:  What can I say? Between Katie Reus and Elle Kennedy I have discovered a new admiration and love for romantic suspense. I had read some from the genre before, of course, but I wouldn’t say that it was my ‘go-to’ genre of choice, and I didn’t actively look for them on the bookshelves (be they virtual or otherwise!). However, with the discovery of these authors I find myself actually looking around and browsing in this genre way more than ever before. I love when an author is so good – so amazing – that it just makes you re-evaluate yourself as a reader. Katie Reus is one of those authors. No matter what she writes, I will pick it up – because she is just that good. Can we say ‘automatic pre-order’? 😉

Shattered Duty is a great book with great characters. Poor Levi! On one hand you love how much he loved his wife – after her horrific death, you are rooting for him to get revenge for her death – and admiring his dedication to her. On the other, you have Selene, and part of you just wants to shake him and say, “Live in the here and now, not in the past! Let yourself love Selene!” It’s always difficult reading a character like Levi, watching him work through his emotions and begin to open himself up to love again. As usual, however, Reus does it beautifully!
